Sweet Pea Cove on the western side of Isla San Marcos was our destination after our long stay in Bahia Concepcion. We had a granola start and a good day of travel past Punta Chivato when we heard a distress call on the VHF from a woman watching a small bi-plane go down on a dirt road. It was a little disconcerting because she was asking for emergency vehicles to be contacted in Mulege and describing a dirt road with no location except “near the estuary.” However, a sailboat with a Dr. aboard responded and stood by just offshore while another sailboat relayed information. After a short while she came back on and reported that the plane was down but the passengers were all walking away from the wreckage unharmed.
We arrived in Sweet Pea Cove in the early afternoon and rested then went exploring in the dingy. The cove is just a small indentation in the island with little shelter, but the weather and wind was fair. We could look south and see the dust from the gypsum mine at the village. We took water to a large fish camp on shore, because they had stopped by asking for some. They had run out, and were grateful to be able to make coffee. We beachcombed, and realized that it was our last time walking the Baja beaches for shells, and our last anchorage of the season. We sat in the cockpit and enjoyed the sun setting behind the Sierra Gigantica.
